
Techwin Limited has successfully implemented the Solarized Toniok Borehole & Water Tower in Perkerra Ward, Baringo County,
delivering a renewable energy water infrastructure project that is improving access to clean and reliable water for hundreds of families.
The project was officially commissioned on 28 July 2026 by H.E. Ambassador Henk Jan Bakker of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and H.E. Benjamin Cheboi, Governor of Baringo County. The initiative was undertaken under the Catchment to Tap (C2T) programme in collaboration with WWF-Kenya, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the County Government of Baringo, and water sector partners.
The project involved the transformation of an existing diesel-powered borehole into a solar-powered water supply system. Techwin Limited implemented the key engineering works, including the installation of solar pumping equipment, construction of a 9-metre-high elevated water tower, and installation of two 10,000-litre storage tanks, giving the system a total storage capacity of 20,000 litres. A community management committee was also established to oversee operation and maintenance, helping ensure the long-term sustainability of the water system.
The upgraded borehole now serves more than 500 households in Toniok and surrounding villages, as well as local schools and health facilities. Before the solarization, the community relied on a diesel-powered pump that was expensive to operate and frequently broke down. Water interruptions were common, and many families were left without water for extended periods whenever fuel was unavailable or the pumping system failed.
Reliable access to clean water has brought significant changes to the community. Women and girls, who previously spent hours walking long distances to collect water, now have access to water much closer to their homes. This has reduced physical strain and saved valuable time that can be used for education, childcare, farming, and other productive activities.
Children are able to spend more time in school instead of searching for water, while households can focus on farming, livestock management, and income-generating activities. Schools and health facilities have also benefited from a more dependable supply of clean water, improving sanitation, hygiene, and healthcare services.
The solarization of the borehole has also reduced the cost of operating the water system. Because the system no longer depends on diesel fuel, the community avoids the high costs associated with fuel, transport, and labour. Residents now contribute a modest maintenance fee, making the water system more affordable and financially sustainable over the long term.
From a climate and development perspective, the project demonstrates the value of renewable energy in strengthening rural water infrastructure. By using solar power, the system reduces dependence on fossil fuels, lowers operating costs, and improves the reliability of water supply during periods when fuel prices rise or supply chains are disrupted. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve water security, catchment conservation, and community water management in Baringo County.
